The Dingo Club: A Gentleman’s Mission

PARIS, FRANCE  – It is late April. The year: 1925. An American expatriate and World War I veteran with a notoriously high tolerance for alcohol sits drinking with two regulars in “Le Dingo,” a bar in the Montparnasse Quarter. His career in the short story is on the rise. It has attracted the attention of another American expatriate and writer of note fresh off publication of his most recent novel, “The Great Gatsby”. This writer enters Le Dingo in medias res of evening drunk (he is by all accounts a lightweight) and approaches the young short story writer. He orders a champagne and introduces himself: F. Scott Fitzgerald. The young writer responds: Ernest Hemingway. Fitzgerald praises Hemingway for his Nick Adams stories. Hemingway, a man who speaks little of his own writings, accepts with subtle humility. Not long after, Fitzgerald turns white from the champagne and is taken home in a taxi. Hemingway drinks on, late into the evening.

Le Dingo was a centerpiece of the “Lost Generation”, as well as the Parisian Modern Movement. It was a favorite of American expatriates and Parisians alike as it was one of the few drinking establishments at the time that was open all night. The things that took place at Le Dingo are the stuff of legend and anecdotes are recounted in great works like A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises. From unintelligible drunken rants to rigorous intellectual debate, it was the forum for talk of all things modern and age-old.

This blog, The Dingo Club, is one gentleman’s attempt to re-establish the social club. From classic cocktails to current crazes, medieval mead to modern craft beer, literary milestones to little magazines, and minuets to mp3s, this Gentlemen’s blog intends to explore the finer things in this world, past and present.

The process is simple. It begins with the opinion of one, which is put forth to all and opened for discussion. It is then on to you, the reader, member of The Dingo Club, and your opinion which is worth nothing until it is shared.

So visit The Dingo Club. Sit down in your favorite chair and order your favorite glass, whatever it be, and listen, drink, talk.

Your blog is overwhelmingly awesome. Beautiful, rich, distinctive, memorable! Just tell me that Curt helped you with the look. Wow, wow, wow.

    Some thoughts:
I was puzzled that I could not find this “Leave a Comment” until I started to look under the seat cushions. I didn’t get it to happen from the footer link(s)

The type under your name, “Host, head bartender, mixologist …” is too horsey.

And my first impression on Sunday was great, but is it too long, wordy. Even for a literary focus?

    Great job!

    Best,

    David
